On August 21, 2011, Doug McConnell of Barrington, Illinois, became the 48th person over age 50 to successfully swim across the English Channel. He swam these grueling miles in memory of his father, David, who passed away from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Through the swim, he also raised $160,000 to support research with the Les Turner ALS Foundation.
This summer, Doug will continue his two-fold quest to become one of the world's most accomplished marathon swimmers, and to raise money to support the accomplishments of Foundation research teams led by Dr. Teepu Siddique and Dr. Hande Ozdinler. Visit Doug's blog to learn about his planned swim from Catalina Island to Long Beach, CA. You can also make a donation on behalf of Doug's efforts.
